Originally designed by Yuko Shimizu, the female white Japanese bobtail cat with a red bow appeared first on a vinyl coin purse. Hello Kitty was introduced in Japan in 1974 and brought to the United States in 1976.

More than thirty years later Hello Kitty is not only a marketing phenomenon, but also a symbol for Japanese kawai pop culture, a trend, both existent in subculture and mainstream, that targets foremost young pre-adolescent girls.
